Bosaso, Puntland, an autonomous region in northeastern Somalia, has intensified its fight against terrorism. Recent updates from the official account
on X highlight substantial progress. The region has demonstrated its commitment to ensuring stability and security through a series of coordinated and determined efforts.
Puntland’s security forces have made significant advancements in their operations against ISIS militants, focusing on the Cal-Miskaad Mountains in the Bari region. This area has long been a known hideout for terrorist groups. Recent operations have resulted in the capture of key militant bases, with resources such as fuel and weapons seized. Foreign fighters associated with ISIS have also been neutralized, further underlining the international dimension of the threat. These victories reflect Puntland’s operational capabilities and resolve in dismantling terrorist networks.
Public support has played a crucial role in the success of these operations. Communities have rallied behind the military, contributing livestock like camels and goats to sustain the troops. This grassroots backing exemplifies the unity and resilience of Puntland’s population in combating terrorism. Additionally, senior government officials have actively supported the forces by visiting troops stationed in strategic locations, including the mountainous areas near Bosaso. These visits, captured in video footage shared on X, have boosted morale and reinforced the government’s commitment to the mission.
The operations have also uncovered evidence of transnational terrorism. Items such as a Saudi passport and international bank cards were recovered from militant bases, indicating the involvement of foreign operatives. This discovery highlights the global scope of terrorism and underscores the necessity of international cooperation in addressing these threats effectively.
While Puntland’s government and people have taken these bold steps to ensure security, they face significant challenges from Villa Somalia. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has blocked nearly $300 million of international funding earmarked for Puntland. This funding, intended to support the people and government of Puntland, has been withheld as a political bargaining tool to force changes to the Transitional Federal Constitution that align with President Mohamud’s preferences. For nearly three years, Puntland has received no financial support from Mogadishu. Additionally, President Mohamud has reportedly attempted to block the United States and other countries from directly aiding Puntland’s counter-terrorism operations in Bari, insisting that all assistance be routed through Mogadishu. Despite these obstacles, Puntland has continued to fund and execute these operations independently, relying solely on the resolve of its people and government. Many Puntlanders, both at home and abroad, question the relevance of maintaining the union with Somalia, given the consistent challenges and perceived attacks on their autonomy.
Culturally and politically, the campaign has resonated deeply within Puntland. Traditional Somali poetry, or “gabay,” has been used as a powerful medium to express collective determination to eradicate terrorism and expel foreign elements. This cultural dimension underscores the deep-rooted solidarity of Puntland’s society in the face of adversity. Politically, the operations have been a central focus for Puntland’s leadership. President Said Abdullahi Deni recently chaired a Council of Ministers session to review the security situation, commend the forces for their successes, and discuss the broader implications for regional stability.
Puntland’s ongoing counter-terrorism efforts underscore its comprehensive approach, which combines military action, community engagement, and political leadership. These efforts reaffirm the region’s role as a key player in the fight against terrorism in the Horn of Africa. The discovery of foreign artifacts among terrorist possessions further emphasizes the importance of vigilance and international collaboration.
As Puntland continues to address these threats, the global community watches closely, hopeful that these efforts will lead to a more secure and stable future in the region.
